Prior to my work training I remember going past a mental institution, where I found out to my horror and disdain (later in my life) that the inmates ( mentally retarded and disabled ) had been exterminated and the hospital had been altered to become a miners welfare centre, a much valued resource occupation for the German Hierarchy, because they even obtain Benzene from certain coal elements and used as vehicle fuel.
I completed my 3 year apprenticeship on becoming a professional Saddler ( horse saddles and accessories ) . During my last 6 months of my training I had to work on Peenamunde Island. This was the main secret scientific research station for the German Nation. I worked on farming, road building and anything else that was demanded of me. The research station was later famous for;: ‘V’ Bomb Rockets and also was involved in all sorts of research including gas and other weapons.. My time spent here and my work was expected of me and was the normal responsible approach. After this time period in 1943 I was forced into conscription into the German Wehrmacht ( German Army ) for S.S. Heavy Machine Gun training. Now because I was one of the soldiers categorised as A1 fit.
The training at this camp was very hard and extreme and only the very fittest were selected as A1 and selected for special duties and from here I was selected to be transferred to Berlin for specialist Body Guard Duties, which eventually would lead me to other adventures, including being one of ‘Hitler’s’ Bodyguards and even guard at ‘Hitler’s’ infamous Bunker.
