After the war and I had left school, I became a photo-journalist and aslo made a few commercial films. I took on a lovely man called Charles Martin who told me this story which I think is well worth remembering. He was a newsreel cameraman and during the war worked as a rota cameraman. He took over from a man who had been at Dover for a month and before he had time to unpack a Commander came in and said'Grab your camera and a clean pair of pants and get aboard that mine sweeper in the harbour'. This Charles did but had no way of knowing where he was going or when he would get back. After he sailed he was told of the Dunkirk evacuation and he took his camera and two spare magazines and shot the pictures we see on the screen every time Dunkirk is talked about. He was the only cameraman there at the time and when he had finished filming he helped to get the lads on board and away. I feel he was just as brave as any one else and I write this because here was a man who had no idea that he was going into one of the nost dangerous places at that time and yet told very few about it. A great cameraman whose film is still shown all over the world and a fitting tribute to all those who lost their lives at Dunkirk.
