This story has been added to the People’s War Website by CSV Volunteer Olivia Davey on behalf of the author Margaret Harvey who understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I joined the Land Army in 1945 towards the end of the war and was sent to Hayle for 2 weeks training, milking and general farm work. From there I was sent to Carbis Bay to work at Beckerleg’s Dairy. This involved a milk round in the mornings and after lunch washing and sterilizing bottles by hand. I was taught to drive. I was sent to their farm to help with the afternoon milking with another land girl who lived there. On the way back to the dairy I had to pick up churns of milk from 3 other farms, which had to be bottled before leaving work, which could be quite late in the summer with the help of another girl.
From there I went to Gwinear to Blamey’s farm doing General Farm work. This I enjoyed very much and lodged with a lovely couple in the village.
My next home was at Bodilly near Helston, which was a hatchery, breeding day old chicks. This was completely different but enjoyable. There my job was driving back and forth to Redruth Station sending “Bodilly’s” best-bred babies to different parts of the country. Other times I would be collecting the eggs from farms around and taking 2 other girls blood-testing fowls even into Devon.
I left to get married in 1948.
