Ages of Conscripted/ Volunteer Soldiers WW2

My father was a Gunner with the Royal Artillery and on DDay, June 6 1944, his age was 36. Would he have been a volunteer and what were the age ranges of conscripted soldiers and volunteer soldiers in Britain?
