How to use the site at home
Written by Samantha Heywood, Imperial War Museum
The website reflects and complements two BBC TV programmes - Zig
Zag snapshots: Children of World War 2, but has been designed to
be used as a stand-alone resource.
The site is easy to use, interactive and fulfils the requirements of children age 7 to 9 years.
Your child will be able to view images of archival sources, click on the sources to find out more and search for different sources using a simple database. Printable worksheets enable you to extend activities in the home.
An interactive activity where your child can go on a shopping journey to discover how rationing worked, which foods were rationed and which were unavailable during the Second World War. Through attempting to buy the items for an evening meal they'll find out by default the realities of shopping for food during the Second World War.
Take a virtual tour of a model house - an exact copy of a real family's wartime house. Find out about objects in each room just by moving the mouse around the screen and clicking on the 'hot links'.
Read correspondence of wartime evacuees and select the 'hot links'. These reveal a pop-up window with more information about the reality behind the words. All the letters are available on-screen in the original manuscript plus a transcript.
The Research Room
This database contains 4 different types of sources from photographs to posters. It is searchable in two ways - by topic (e.g. 'Evacuation') or by type of source (e.g. 'letters and documents').
