Monday 2 July: A rough first night

By Nathan Williams

The ship at sea
The ship made good progress overnight
Last night was the crew’s first night at sea and they were suitably baptised. The strong following wind gave them a great turn of speed but also brought with it a lot of rain. At one point the boat was going at 12 knots, an impressive speed for such a vessel. Maintaining control of the ship at that speed proved a challenge and Carsten [the captain] decided to reef the sail – tie up some of the material to reduce its size and therefore power. Even with the reefed sail they made good speed and soon were passing the northern tip of Denmark

While one half of the crew sailed the ship, the other half attempted to get some sleep. Not many of them managed it. Those that did nod off were soon woken by a wave splashing over the ship – but then they are sailing in a completely open boat.

Morning brought a brief respite from the downpours but also the first injury of the trip when Louise got a rope caught on her leg and twisted her knee. Fortunately it wasn’t serious and so the oars have become her make-shift sick bed. For those not on shift the dry spells are a chance to catch up on sleep.

By afternoon the rain was back. The plan is to carry on sailing through the next night before reaching land in Norway for some much needed rest.
