Charlotte Brontës First Book

This tiny book was probably the first ever book Charlotte Brontë wrote. Written at the tender age of 10 it is about the adventures of ‘Young Men’ and it is inspired by the toy soldiers that she and her brother used to play with.

It is a miniature and is written in such tiny handwriting that you can hardly read it, although it is beautifully illustrated.

The book, which has never been published, shows the incredible thought processes and imagination that Charlotte Brontë had even as a child; a creativity that would lead her on to write Jane Eyre, one of the most popular novels of all time.

Presenter Jules Hudson says: "An incredibly small but important relic that so innocently maps out the beginnings of an extraordinarily talented woman’s life."

Where can it be found? At the Brontë Parsonage Museum, Haworth.

Ann Dinsdale, librarian, says: "It came naturally to the Brontës to write everything down."
