1986 GREAT BARDFIELD WINDMILL

The windmill in Great Bardfield is
3OO years old. It is a brick built
tower with a boat shaped cap and
 common sails. The windmill was
 originally worked in conjunction with
the watermill. When the water level
dropped at the mill the windmill would
be used instead for grinding the
wheat, which was used for cattle feed.
The present wall around the windmill
is made from the original workings and
cogs of the mill. The steps leading to
the mill are made from the grinding
stones. The workings for the sails are
still in the cap even though the mill
has been converted into a residential
 dwelling.

What is Domesday?

In 1986 the BBC launched an ambitious project to record a snapshot of everyday life across the UK for future generations. A million volunteers took part…  read more here

In 2011 the BBC published the survey online and for six months invited updates to the photographs and text to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

Shortly afterwards the website was added to The National Archives’ UK Government Web Archive.

If you are reading this via UK Government Web Archive, then the original Domesday search function and contact form will not work. This is a consequence of the archiving process. See Using Domesday for more details.
