1986 LAW AND ORDER

  We interviewed a police constable
who is a beat officer for this area.
A beat officer is a policeman who
works in a specific area,a "beat"
getting to know the people in that
area.The P.C. said that attitudes
towards the police in the area seem
good.He emphasized that his job would
be impossible without the co-operation
of the public.
CRIME
The police station this constable is
based at is very busy. There are a
large number of crimes in the area
that the police station covers. The main
crimes are burglaries,drug related
offences (people steal to obtain money
to buy drugs) and thefts from motor
cars.There are more serious offences
such as armed robbery.Violence is a
problem. This P.C. has in his career
been stabbed twice and shot.

In 2011 the BBC published the survey online and for six months invited updates to the photographs and text to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

Shortly afterwards the website was added to The National Archives’ UK Government Web Archive.

If you are reading this via UK Government Web Archive, then the original Domesday search function and contact form will not work. This is a consequence of the archiving process. See Using Domesday for more details.
