  In the Scalby/Newby area there are 2 
 banks and 3 building societies.       
 Barclays is only a daughter branch and
 does not provide a full range of      
 services.  It was established in 1965 
 and has 3 employees.  The National    
 Westminster Bank was established in   
 1971 and employs 5 people.  The       
 Scarborough Building Society, founded 
 in 1846, has its headquarters at      
 Scalby, where 60 people are employed. 
 The Society has 20 branches, 7 of them
 in Scarborough.  The Halifax branch is
 run by  solicitors and was            
 established in 1979-80 employing 6    
 people.  The Abbey National office,   
 established in 1976-7, employs 2      
 people.  It also caters for people    
 from Whitby seeking withdrawals from
