1986 INTRODUCTION TO MANSFIELD

 THE NAME 'MANSFIELD' WAS MENTIONED IN 
 THE ORIGINAL DOMESDAY BOOK OF 1086    
 BEING DERIVED FROM 'OPEN GROUND ON THE
 RIVER MAUN'.                          
 IN THE MIDDLE AGES IT WAS AT THE VERY 
 CENTRE OF SHERWOOD FOREST AND A PLAQUE
 ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE TOWN CENTRE   
 STILL MARKS THE REPUTED CENTRE OF THE 
 ANCIENT FOREST.                       
 WHILST TREES ARE LESS COMMON NOW,THEIR
 BY-PRODUCT,COAL,HAS PLAYED AN         
 IMPORTANT PART IN  THE DEVELOPMENT  OF
 THE  TOWN SINCE THE 14th.CENTURY.     
 MUCH MALE EMPLOYMENT IN THE TOWN IS   
 STILL DUE TO THE MINES,WHILST HOSIERY 
 MILLS ARE A MAJOR EMPLOYER OF FEMALE  
 LABOUR.                               
 THE CURRENT POPULATION OF MANSFIELD IS
 ESTIMATED TO BE 85,700 AND THE TOWN IS
 SITUATED 25KM. NORTH WEST OF          
 NOTTINGHAM, SOUTH EAST OF CHESTERFIELD
 AND SOUTH WEST OF LINCOLN.

In 2011 the BBC published the survey online and for six months invited updates to the photographs and text to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

Shortly afterwards the website was added to The National Archives’ UK Government Web Archive.
