1986 MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION

  There are 203 men  on the site.They  
 get paid £100 a week.If they work     
 over_time they get £400.              
  After the ground has been levelled   
 the drainage is put in.First of all   
 trenches are dug out with tracked     
 diggers.Next a layer of concrete is   
 laid.After this porous pipes are      
 set in.After this gravel is put on top
 so that water can seep through into   
 the pipes.                            
  To build the actual road they have   
 to put in the sub base .This is large,
 compacted, crushed stones. Next the   
 course base is laid. This is smaller  
 stones mixed with cement.Then the     
 road surface is put down.This is a    
 thick layer(100mm)of small stones     
 mixed with asphalt called tarmacadam. 
 Next the actual  wearing surface is   
 laid.The wearing surface is 40mm thick
 and intended to last about 6 years.
