1986 HALLO'EEN/HOP TU NAA
On the night before Hallowe'en I make
my lantern.I get a turnip and a knife
and a spoon.I cut off the top of the
turnip and then get a spoon and scoop
the flesh out. Then I make a well in
the bottom for the candle to keep it
in the lantern.I light the candle to
melt some wax, because when the wax
hardens it keeps the candle in the
well.I also cut patterns of moons,
stars, witches monsters and cats on
the turnip surface.
When I go out on Hop Tu Naa a friend
comes round and we take a box of
matches. The light often goes out and
needs relighting. We go to lots of
houses and sing the Hop Tu Naa
song.
"Hop Tu Naa your father's gone away
and he won't be back until the
morning."
There is more to this rhyme also. Pictures from this D-block

In 2011 the BBC published the survey online and for six months invited updates to the photographs and text to celebrate the 25th anniversary.
Shortly afterwards the website was added to The National Archives’ UK Government Web Archive.
If you are reading this via UK Government Web Archive, then the original Domesday search function and contact form will not work. This is a consequence of the archiving process. See Using Domesday for more details.
