Lucky
listeners at The Lamb in Malvern were treated to a surprise performance
from virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy.
Nigel
was playing with fellow Malvern musician, Caleb Clarke, and during
a break in the performance, BBC Hereford and Worcester's Web Producer,
Dan Johnson, spoke to Nigel and Caleb about their local pub, their
love of Aston Villa, and their music.
The
appearance of Nigel's West Malvern home on the housing market during
the summer had sparked fears that he would be leaving Malvern but
he insisted that he had no plans to leave:
"I'm
not moving. I just put the house on the market to taunt a few journalists"
he said.
Nigel
also spoke about life on the road: "I've
been to a few nice places. The great thing about music is that all
over the world people can be brought together by some music that
has got some honest feeling to it."
When
Nigel was asked why he enjoys performing with Caleb he said "Well,
I love Caleb. I'd really love to help him get where he should be
on CDs and different things like that.
"He's
just got to learn two things. How to maintain his hold on his phone
and also his guitar because without a phone and a guitar you soon
learn that it's very difficult to be a working musician.
Caleb
and Nigel share a love of Aston Villa as Caleb explained:
"We
love the football, we support the Villa which is the best team in
the world."
Nigel
added "Not only that, Villa invented football. In 1876, William
McGregor invented the league."
Nigel
had some good advice for young aspiring musicians: "Enjoy your
music, do a few things like what the teacher tells you but also
try a few things out. Make some music with your friends and that's
the way to get involved with music.
"Practicing
on your own is great, trying things out on your own is great but
make a few songs with your friends. That's the best way to get into
music. The heart is where you're at. Once the instrument starts
talking to you a little then you're on the right track."
