Robert
Plant, the world famous ex-singer of supergroup Led Zeppelin, is
the patron of the record label, MAS Records, and has been integral
to the development of this innovative project.
BBC
Hereford and Worcester's Web Producer Dan Johnson asked the legendary
rocker what it was all about.
When
did your relationship with Kidderminster College begin?
"My relationship with Kidderminster College began the day I
was expelled. The principal had decided that I had spent too much
time dallying with music in the common room."
How
did the record label come about?
"It’s the beginning of an extension for gifted students. If
anybody can really get it together and create music, if they’re
good enough then they can be absorbed and they can be listened to
by Kevin (Gammond) and myself and they’ll be offered the facilities
that are here to record. That means that they then have a showpiece
which can be taken to major labels."
Are
there more opportunities with schemes like this now than when you
were at college?
"There
were no schemes like this. Music was considered to be the alien.
Music was the other side of academic creative attainment. Music
was the devil. Music is a panacea to life, it’s one of the great
releases. When guys have been working all day there’s nothing better
than a good tune. There’s thousands of tunes in this area waiting
to be born."
What
advice do you have for young musicians? "Work hard and
don’t take it seriously. It’s great fun but when you think you’ve
had enough, work on. Find that melody, there’s some great tunes
that haven’t been written yet."
