Hello I wonder if you could answer a couple of questions:
I have read that the large amount of magpies are responsible
for the reduction in other wild birds in peoples gardens,
is this true? My fathers house has a badger set in or
near his garden, can he do anything about it? (mainly
because of the damage they cause to grass / garden plots
(plus they drive the dog crazy!)
Harry Green our wildlife man
After a long period of increase national magpie populations
are levelling off. On a local scale they may take many
nests of eggs or young birds in gardens which can be quite
distressing to those who like their birds. Most often
they take early broods (when their own young are in the
nest) and most small song birds will try again (several
times) and will usually produce a brood ir two. Scientific
studies have repeatedly failed to show any link between
magpies and national decline in small birds. If fact the
biggest declines in small birds has been on farmland (generally
a result of intensive agricullture) where magpies are
relatively scarce and not in towns and villages where
most birds do well. There are exceptions of course like
the unexplained decline in song thrushes (survival of
fledged young during the first 3 months of life has been
bad) though this is probably due to food shortage at a
crucial time. Badgers are fully protected by law. To move
them a licence in needed and there has to be a good case
of course. Licences are dealt with by DEFRA. They do on
occasion like digging up lawns which have a high content
of earthworms! If you really have a problem you can put
up low electric fences to discourage them. Otherwise heavy
weight chain link fence is needed at least 4ft about ground
and over a foot below ground or bent in direction of badger
entry! Electric is cheaper and effective. Lawn damage
usually happens over a fairly short period of time - early
spring and late autumn generally. Dry weather forces the
worms down and badgers then look elsewhere for food! There
is a leaflet produced by DEFRA "Badger problems:
advice to householders" which is probably available
on their web site though I haven't looked lately. The
RSPCA also produce a helpful A4 booklet. You can also
try phoning DERFRA office Whittington Road, Worcester.

Lord Randle's Pudding. I was in the car so I couldn't
