FACTS

The Lichgate at Worcester was the last remaining example of a cathedral lichgate in England.

Sadly it was demolished around 1963

What was the Lichgate?

The Lichgate was a covered gateway where coffins were rested before entry to the graveyard next to the cathedral.

The Lichgate at Worcester was the last remaining example of a cathedral lichgate in England. Sadly it was demolished around 1963.

Derivation: The word 'Lich' or 'Lych' derives from the Old English 'Lyk' - meaning 'body' or 'corpse'.
