Music reviewer, Andy O'Hare

The Hare Piece

Andy O'Hare goes to more gigs than you can shake a stick at. He lives in Worcester, but says he prefers the music scene in Hereford. This is his weekly 'what's live and local' blog about the thriving music scene in the two counties.

Droitwich Music Festival, Victoria Square 11.07.09

The excellent eight day Droitwich Music Festival closed off last Saturday with a 'Daytime Showcase' in Victoria Square. Only the one stage was in action today, compared to the three scattered around town the previous week, but it was still a tasty little selection of local talent.

Scarlet Carmina

Scarlet Carmina

First up, when I arrived, were the young Worcester rockers Scarlet Carmina who in my view are coming on in leaps and bounds. They're the band with the Voicebox rubber-tube fx-thingy on guitars.

Rase

Rase

I'd seen Dan Greenaway play a couple of times in Droitwich last Saturday. This week it was time to swap his acoustic for a battered and well-travelled Telecaster, as he fronted up his alter-persona rock band Rase. Quality stuff, this, from Dan and the guys - but I was momentarily distracted when some guy tried to use the phonebox right next to the full-on PA to make a call - I didn't have the heart to ask him whether it was worth while! Also, I was a trifle suspicious of the young girls screaming after each song - I just wonder if they were being paid by the decibel...

Crooked Empire

Crooked Empire

By this time the wine-bar opposite had emptied its punters onto the street - so it was a good-sized crowd that caught the full blast of the best rock'n'rolling set I've yet heard from The Crooked Empire. This foursome seem to be improving all the time, and well worth the girly screaming that they also received!

RockDog Project

RockDog Project

I'm glad to say that the weather held off for most of the afternoon. The last band, before I caught the bus back, was Bromsgrove's Rock-Dog Project - nothing to do with The Rock-it Dogs (wonder what's happened to them?). This likeable foursome crank out their own numbers in an unashamedly vintage 70's punk mould - nice if you like that sort of thing - which of course I do! I hope to hear more from these geezers soon.

It was nice of Holly (Llama Lounge) Jeffery to let us know that once the rain came - the show relocated to inside Spiders wine bar, where Daniel Angelus, The Players and Fighting Shadows closed off this year's offering of music from Droitwich - I'm looking forward to next year folks!

You can listen to all the latest music from across the two counties on the Friday Session Introducing... every week from 7pm, on BBC Hereford & Worcester. The Music Map success stories are from 6pm.

Craigus Barry The cretinal Headache
Re: Damo Suzuki at Marrs Bar;Ah what a rather amusing review Mr O'Hairy.. The Furby was indeed an active member that night! This particular Furby was modified electronically by a local genius who calls himself Squidfanny {I kid you not}! In addition to modifying kids toys he also has a knack for creating noisy otherworldly doorbells plus circuit bending casio tone keyboards, omnichords & Drum machines.. Thus he is the unspoken saviour of noisy devices in Worcester. -The shear joy of hearing a toy Furby at ridiculous volume fed through a chain of delays commence to scat along with a legend like Damo Suzuki is certainly something I will never forget..Hearing his little circuit bent beak spouting “Yum Yum” in tandem with Damo’s relentless “Wine oh Wine oh Wine” was extremely weird to say the least. . It was pretty much the only time the marrs bar will hear such surrealism in one night. Although the gig was enjoyable, my vintage 1960’s amplifier is most likely a bit ruined now. Largely from having a Theremin, a modified toy gun, the furby and electric violin shoved into it all at the same time.. What did I learn?? I am a total weasel beard perhaps a little too over zealous with such impulsive cunning stunts of stupidity.. -your listening to friday session!
