This guide will take you to three historic castles in a single day - all on the border with Wales.

For centuries the border between Herefordshire and Wales was a wild and lawless place - the scene of anything from cross-border raids to full scale invasions.

Small wonder that so many castles were built in the so-called Marches area - as after the Norman invasion, successive rulers tried to bring peace to the region.
