Pigs
Black Berkshire pigs

BBC H&W Local TV - watch again - pampered pigs

The pigs that produce some of the most expensive pork in the world are being reared in Worcestershire.

Kurobuta pork, which costs £8 a chop, is being produced in Collett's Green by a farmer who pampers his pigs in a rather unusual way.

You can watch Cath Mackie's report on these remarkable pigs.

  • This highly priced type of pork comes from the ancient Black Berkshire breed of pig
  • Legend has it that Oliver Cromwell discovered the Berkshire breed more than 300 years ago while his army was at winter’s quarters in Reading
  • Ironically the breed was then taken up by the Royal family, who kept a large herd at Windsor.
  • In the 19th century the British Government presented some of the breed to the Japanese government
  • They developed the distinctive Kurobuto pork - one of the most prized meats in Japan
  • Kurobuta pork is visibly different in two important ways: The color of Kurobuta pork is darker and richer and the meat is well-marbled, a unique characteristic.
