Listen to what the person and others tell you.
Show respect and promote their dignity.
We all react differently to different situations, consider their different needs and risks.
Can they hear you? Do they understand? Consider who else can help. Remember people may have an impairment or English may not be their first language
Think of what support you might need at the time and afterwards
