Clicking jaw

My jaw clicks when I eat. Is this a joint problem?

Mike

Dr Rob Hicks responds

Dr Rob HicksThe temporo-mandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull, allowing the jaw to open and close. If the bite is off-centre, the jaw won't work correctly and you may hear clicking.

This problem may arise after an injury to the jaw or if the teeth are damaged.

Possible complications

Inflammation can occur in the joint, making it painful to open or close the mouth, especially when chewing food. People who grind their teeth at night may have this problem, too.

Headaches, earache and facial pain can all result from joint inflammation. If left untreated it can become arthritic just like any other joint in the body that isn't functioning properly.

Treatments

Soft foods help by reducing strain on the jaw. The inflammation and pain can be eased with anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. Applying a heat pack to the area can help.

The malalignment can be corrected with a temporary mouth splint provided by a dentist. In the meantime, any contributing dental problems should also be treated.
