Portsmouth's FA Cup day

Some of the greatest footballers in the world have lifted the FA Cup over the years - fans got the chance to get up close to the legendary trophy when BBC South brought it to a pre-Cup Final day at The Spinnaker Tower.

Fans were able to see the cup that Pompey would be playing for on Saturday 17 May, 2008 when BBC South brought the famous piece of silverware to the Portsmouth landmark.

Supporters from all over the South - through to far flung corners over the globe queued in the blazing sunshine on Monday 12 May to see the gleaming trophy.

Gary Clements who emigrated from the city to New Zealand nearly 20 years ago was one fan who brought a camera along to have his picture taken with the famous Cup:

"You just think of this sparkling, highly polished trophy - just the history behind it is enough to draw you to it," he said.

"It’s been a boyhood dream to see Pompey in the FA Cup final so I've travelled back from New Zealand for the final, I've got my ticket and I'm going on Saturday!”

The Cup was on display on the lower deck of the Tower for over five hours; you can see a selection of pictures from the afternoon in our gallery and watch the highlights from South Today with Roger Johnson.
