North + South is an unique art project that explores who we think we are and what England stands for in the 21st Century. ![]() Pippa Hale's Charge National identity has never been more hotly debated. The relationship between Britain, its nations and its people dominates both the media and party politics. Visual artists from every region of the country have been selected to give their interpretation of England's diverse society and identity and add to the national debate. Exhibitions are being staged at both ends of the country - in Southampton and in galleries in Sunderland. Amongst the works on show at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton is 7 Nights, 7 Bed & Breakfasts, 7 Full English Breakfasts by Jane Chavez-Dawson. It's a playful film in which the artist seeks out quintessential English B&Bs. Other works featured include Samar Asamoah’s Greenhouse, 2006 in which a garden greenhouse is intricately etched with Islamic symbols and patterning. ![]() Susan Diab's seaside postcards Southampton City Art Gallery hosts the work of nine artists including Pippa Hale - Charge is a series of flags based on the St George’s Cross designed to question perceptions of patriotism and nationhood in a world dominated by global brands. Yvonne Buchheim’s Song Archive: Listen to England is a 'song line', a 10 day journey using public transport from Southampton to Sunderland through cities, towns and villages. Accompanying the exhibitions is a series of events, talks and workshops.
