Southampton's Mela Festival

Thousands of festival-goers filled Southampton's Hoglands Park on Saturday 12th August to enjoy a day of live Asian music, dance and art.

Art Asia's annual Mela festival, an exotic mix of South Asian arts and music, is one of the city's biggest summer events, attracting around 15,000 people who flock to Hoglands Park to enjoy the music, activities and cuisine.

This was the fourth year that the leafy park came alive with the sights, sounds and spicy smells of the colourful nine hour Mela.

The festival's main stage hosted a wide variety of music including South Asian classical, folk, Qawwali, Asian fusion and Bhangra, while the activities marquee hosted an array of music and dance demonstrations and workshops.

Mela, which means "festival" in a variety of South Asian languages, is a free event put together by Southampton-based Asian Arts organisation Art Asia which aims to offer people the chance to experience the different South Asian cultures.
