The BBC South Sports Awards take place each December to celebrate the finest in sporting achievement over the past year.

The highlight of the night was the announcement of the BBC South Sports Personality of the Year. This year's shortlist boasted two world record holders, solo yachtswoman Dee Caffari, mountaineer Rhys Jones and Reading Football Club captain Graeme Murty. The winner was Graeme Murty, the man who led Reading's footballers into the Premiership and is the Club’s longest serving player and team captain. ![]() Graeme Murty accepting his award He was an instrumental figure in what has been described on the club website as a 'truly incredible season which stands out as the undoubted highlight of the club's 135-year history.' The Scotland international who plays right back has already been named the fan’s official player of the year twice during his successful career, and in the season that saw Reading promoted to the premiership for the first time, Graeme famously scored the winner in the 2-1 final-day win over QPR.
