Fleeing New York Interview

Indy Almroth-Wright
Southampton's up and coming arty, blues/pop outfit have been getting plenty of attention after independently releasing their debut mini album AOK, we caught up with frontman Russell Marsden to find out more...

Fleeing New York

  • Russell Marsden
  • Emma Richardson
  • Matt Hayward
  • The band took their name from the Hunter S. Thompson novel, Songs Of The Doomed.

How did you all get together as a band?
Me and Matt the drummer met when we were kids through family and friends.  He was the only kid I knew with a drum kit so I roped him into forming a band - so we've had lots of bands and he's still in it!  I met Emma when I was doing my A-Levels at Barton Peveril in Eastleigh and thought it would be pretty cool to have a girl in a rock band because you don't really see that many, so I conned her into it as well.

For the uninitiated, how would you sum up FNY's sound?
Well, we're a three piece so it's a simple thing but that makes it a bit more direct.  It's quite funky and loud and we've got girl and boy vocals so you get that kind of thing going on, that Sonny and Cher thing....

When did things start to kick off for the band?
Well we decided not to go for the usual route of many bands and go for a large record company because we decided we didn't want to change what we were doing. We also stopped doing our educational courses, jobs etc and focused 100% on the band and it all started to happen.   We're a lot poorer now and we're working a lot harder.

How do you fund yourselves?
We have private investors who we've sold points on our records to, so people own a little tiny bit of our record.  It's just like starting up a new company.

What do you look like?
We've all grown our hair a bit and we're a bit angrier now because we've all been through the mill and know that the big wide world isn't all fluffy bunnies, so we're a bit angrier and cynical, but that's cool.

Is this your biggest tour so far?
Yeah, another thing about not going with a big record company is that there's not much money around to say 'oh let's go off and tour Europe' because it costs a lot of money.  Normally you don't make tons on your first tour.  It's going to be good, we're going all the way up to Glasgow, so it's going to be fun.

How does it feel when you hear your music on the radio?
Like cycling without holding the handle bars!

How would you describe a FNY performance?
Emma would probably be better at this... Um, volume and a bit of sweat, a bit of shiny glitter and a bit of dancing.

Do any of the band have any strange habits?
Emma has a fantastic habit of when she's nervous speaking in an American accent - with the name it's kind of funny and Matt likes to sleep when he's not essentially needed - he's a great cat-napper.
