Think-tanks, Research Groups, Campaigners & Academics

Please remember that the Editorial Guideline below means that we should take particular care when reporting the research, comments or any views of think-tanks, campaign groups or organisations which advocate policy positions or take any political viewpoint. 

 

4.4.14

 

We should not automatically assume that contributors from other organisations (such as academics, journalists, researchers and representatives of charities) are unbiased and we may need to make it clear to the audience when contributors are associated with a particular viewpoint, if it is not apparent from their contribution or from the context in which their contribution is made.

 

 

Mention of all such organisations, therefore, should normally include some context to ensure that the audience clearly understands the relevant organisation’s point of view.

 

For most think-tanks, it is advisable to check on the Analysis and Research site:

which has suggestions for an appropriate description for many such organisations.  However, the list is not exhaustive and it is important to apply the principle whenever we are using such information in our output. 

 

If we do not give sufficient context for the particular perspective being presented, then the audience are likely to assume that the source of such material is impartial - when it may not be…
