The BBC maintains guidelines on the technology implications of the Disability Discrimination Act and standards for designing websites and applications to accommodate users with disabilities.
Introduction
The UK Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 1995 to introduce new measures aimed at ending the discrimination which many disabled people face. It protects disabled people in the areas of:
- employment;
- access to goods, facilities and services and;
- the management, buying or renting of land or property.
The BBC aims to
- provide all general BBC information in formats appropriate to its disabled employees
- ensure that all disabled employees can access all the programmes on desktop PCs

Diversity Policy Ref 02
The
BBC will make all reasonable adjustments within the technical environment to
ensure we comply with the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995/Equalities
Act 2010. This
means:
-
Ensuring our desktop and broadcast technologies comply with the standards
detailed in the Technical Accessibility Standards documents, which form part of
the BBC's technical standards, "Delivering Quality", published on
www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/dq/contents/diversity.shtml.
-
Trying to ensure web services on bbc.co.uk are accessible by:
- defining how the service will aim to reasonably support the different
accessibility needs of our disabled audiences
- defining and using appropriate guidelines (published on
www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/futuremedia/accessibility/) to guide the production of the
service to meet those aims
- user-testing the service with disabled users to check its
implementation meets those aims
- providing help for disabled users to use the service in the best way
for them.
