Children in Need

The Guernsey Sports Commission was awarded £75,330 by Children in Need in November 2009.

The money will be used by the commission to expand their grass roots sports initiative of taking sport to the streets.

Becky Wain from the Commission said: "It means we can go to where the young people are and get a good team together [to work with them]."

The grant will be paid out over three years.

Becky explained: "At the moment I'm working on my own so this means we can appoint three teams... and then get out to the streets so we can deliver sport to the streets, to young people."

A big part of the Commission's plan involves working with youngsters on local estates with the development of ball park areas and the aim of creating different sports teams to play each other.

Becky said: "Sport can make a massive difference - it's a good social element, it's a confidence builder... sport breaks down a lot of barriers and we're bringing it to them so the cost element will be reduced as well."

Stuart Falla, chairman of the Sports Commission, said: "We're very happy, its very exciting news for us."

The youngsters who regularly use the ball park area at Les Genats were very positive about the new developments and told us why they enjoy playing sports.

George said: "You learn different skills and it's really good for team building and it keeps you fit."

Aidan added: "It's good for teamwork and having a laugh."
