St Andrew's parish won the Silver Gilt Award at the Britain in Bloom Awards 2009 and was shortlisted for the Young People's Discretionary Award.

The awards attracted entries from more than 1,100 communities, making it the largest competition of its kind in Europe. Sixty-seven finalists were chosen to represent their region or nation in the UK finals which were held in Torbay.

St Andrew entered the large village section of the competition. Judge Jon Wheatley explained that the different villages were judged by "clearly set criteria" looking at "horticulture, cleanliness and community feeling and input".

The judges were particularly impressed with the "excellent community involvement" within St Andrew and noted in particular the inclusion of the school, the varied ages involved and the participation of the Guernsey Blind Association.

Organiser Gill Thwaite explained that St Andrew's community spirit set them apart: "We just try really hard... we sell it as a good, fun activity and we're a social group."

St Andrew's School were one of five shortlisted for the Young People's Discretionary Award. Gill said it was a "real tribute to Mary Sebire and her team, and the children at the school".

The late Joss Watts was also honoured with one of eight RHS Community Champion award. Her husband Ray Watts collected her award and received a standing ovation.

"I think it was a great tribute to what Joss has done, not only for the parish but also for the island as well," he said.

Ray said he believed the parish had a great team of people who contributed to the competition. On the future he said: "It's just a case of building on what they've done in the past and there's plenty of potential to move that on."
