Vocal Sampling in action

Vocal sampling

A unique Cuban group called Vocal Sampling toured Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Jersey in June 2009 as part of the Collins Stewart World Music Series.

The musicians sounded like a full salsa band, but are actually six men using just their voices to create a full range of timbres and textures.

They used their voices to reproduce all the instruments of the Latin Orchestra - percussion, horns, keyboard and bass. Their music is based on traditional Cuban music but also influenced by modern salsa and jazz.

The World Music Series, organised by the Channel Island Music Council, has an educational element and seeks to introduce the island's children to music from different cultures.

With this in mind Vocal Sampling showcased their music to Guernsey's school children during the day, before playing to the wider community in the evening.

Group member Rene Banos said, "it was really great to share [our music] with the children because we also started music when we were children, so we kind of felt ... in the same mood as them."

The group met at music school in Cuba and began playing with their voices as an after-school game. It is now their full-time career and has led to their album Cambio de Tiempo being nominated for three Grammy awards.

The group enjoyed their visit to the islands and Rene added, "It was also very nice to be here in the island for the first time and [perform] concerts and workshops ... in four of the islands."
