Skate Park to be dismantled

After more than a year at the Island Bowl Guernsey's Skate Park is moving on.

"All good things come to an end and here we are looking for another site to erect another park for a similar period until the new facilities are hopefully approved and provided," said Paul DelaMare of Guernsey X-treme Sports Association (GXSA).

Deputy Mike O'Hara, who is the chairman of GXSA and the Culture and Leisure Minister said, "The application for the proposed skate park is presently with Environment and all details will be released in the immediate future.

"It is vital that we find a permanent facility for these youngsters so that they can carry out their sport. We are hopeful that the details will be acceptable to Environment which will then allow us to pursue a fund raising campaign to make the park a reality."

In the meantime the Association is looking for another site to erect or even store the present apparatus.

"We must vacate the car park by Easter to allow it to be used for the Muratti so we urgently need to find another temporary location," said Paul. "If we cannot find a home for all or even sections of the skate park then we will have no option but to dismantle the park which would be a great pity as it provides such an enjoyable facility for all those that use it."

More than 12 months ago the Island Bowl very kindly gave their permission to use their car park to enable a skate park to be erected. The Environment recognised the need for the park and gave their permission for it to operate for a year.

It has been very successful and the GXSA are very grateful to Harry O'Neil, manager of the Island Bowl, for all his assistance whilst the park has been in operation. The association recognize these efforts and also the sacrifice that the Bowl has made through the loss of some of their car parking.

Paul would be pleased to receive any ideas on suitable temporary storage or locations or any enquiries for parts of the installation and can be contacted on 07781 434843.
