New bring banks were put out this week but with the fragility of the global recyclables market, is now the right time for the States to start another new scheme. Alex South reports... Help playing audio/video Monday 26 JanuaryOffenders in Guernsey have been doing their bit for the community. It's part of a scheme to spare them having to serve a prison sentence. A community service scheme has been set up with the help of the Jersey Probation Service and in just over a year more than 100 offenders have taken part instead of going to jail. Mike Wilkins reports... Two Guernsey sports teams have pulled out of this year's Island Games because they can't afford to go. Men's basketball and Clay target shooting will not be represented in Aland. The withdrawal's been blamed on unprecedented financial times and it appears that other teams in the Channel Islands are also being affected by the cost of competing this summer. Alex South reports... Friday 23 JanuaryThe Channel Islands is facing a severe shortage of nurses. Both Jersey and Guernsey have reported problems in recruiting and retaining skilled staff. It's impacting not only on the nurses themselves, but also on the level of patient care with Jersey's hospital reducing the number of available beds. Mike Wilkins reports... Wednesday 21 JanuaryA last-ditch attempt has been made to save a Guernsey school from closure. The Parent Teacher Association at St Sampson's Infants staged a public meeting last night in a final effort to put their case ahead of a debate in the States next week. Mike Wilkins reports... Tuesday 20 JanuaryAfter years of struggling to pay high rents, help could be at hand for some small businesses in Guernsey. Plans to free up land for light industry are being circulated in a bid to stop small firms going out of business. Mike Wilkins reports... Monday 19 JanuaryA Guernsey man who tried to set up a household recycling collection scheme has been told he'll have to pay commercial rates. Lee Mills intended to pick up recyclables from island homes and take them to bring banks in exchange for a small fee. But the States has told him he'll have to pay tip charges. Mike Wilkins reports. Friday 16 JanuaryPeople in Guernsey have said they don't want the pension age to rise to seventy. In response to a questionnaire sent out by the Social Security department, almost fifteen hundred said they weren't happy working an extra five years. An ageing population threatens the economy so States members gathered today for some blue sky thinking. Mike Wilkins reports. A million pound shortfall in fuel duty in Guernsey is being described as "not a problem". It follows the abolition of motor tax at the beginning of 2008, as Alex South reports... Thursday 15 JanuaryAlison Merrien won the Guernsey Sports Commission's Outstanding Perfomer of 2008 award at last night's Sporting Achievements' ceremony. The former World athletics Champion Steve Cram hosted the event and used the opportunity to call on sponsors of Sport in Guernsey to carry on investing despite the credit crunch. Alex South reports... Wednesday 14 JanuaryElsewhere, there are fears that the poor exchange rate is putting foreign workers off coming to Guernsey. The pound has fallen in value against the euro in recent weeks and that has made Guernsey less attractive for overseas workers. But, as Mike Wilkins reports, a strong Euro may not necessarily be bad news for the island... Tuesday 13 JanuaryFuel suppliers aren't passing on reductions to consumers in Guernsey. That's according to Deputy Dave Jones, who says the price of a litre of petrol or diesel is higher than it should be. Mike Wilkins reports... Monday 12 JanuaryParents who support their children whilst playing football in Guernsey are being urged to show more respect to players and officials. The initiative comes from the Guernsey Football Association and started this weekend. Our reporter Alex South went along to see how it was received... Thursday 8 JanuaryGuernsey Electricity can now see exactly how much electricity some of its customers use through self reading meters. More than 16,000 homes and businesses in the island have now been fitted with the device as Alex South reports... Wednesday 7 JanuarySavers with money in Landsbanki Guernsey met with the Island's Chief Minister today. They're fighting to get all their money back after the bank collapsed last October, but as Mike Wilkins reports, they weren't given much hope by the States... Tuesday 6 JanuaryThe number of people charged for drink-driving in Guernsey and Jersey has fallen. Over the last year, Guernsey's seen the greatest reduction, with a drop of nearly a quarter.
