Election 2008You are in: Guernsey > States of Guernsey > Election 2008 > Carol Steere ![]() Carol Steere. Carol SteereCarol Steere is a candidate standing for election in the St Peter Port North district. I was first elected as a St Peter Port deputy in 1985 and served until 2000. During those 15 years I worked on a number of committees. I was President of Heritage, Vice-President of Social Security, Recreation, Traffic and Tourist Board and served on many others. I trust I am remembered as a Deputy was active, caring and approachable. There has been a lot of criticism if the outgoing House. It is hard not to be critical when the headlines have been full of overspends, tax changes, cuts in services and a list of unfulfilled capital projects. The next four years will be just as challenging for States members. The financial constraints on States spending will mean some tough decisions regarding services and capital projects. Some decisions could upset the public, but politics is not a popularity contest. It is about doing what is right to safe guard the community’s well being; socially, economically and environmentally. I do not pretend to be an expert on all things and I don't have a list of ready-made solutions to offer you. But I do understand that there are times when you have to cut back on some things to ensure that the essentials remain in place. The role of a good government is to ensure it gets the balance right. To go some way to achieving this I believe the Island needs a balance in the make-up of its elected representatives. Yes, you need business expertise but you also need people prepared to take a stand on social issues. My priorities lie with education, health, social services and welfare. They always have and always will. 300 words cannot convey all I have to offer. Please take time to read my manifesto when you receive it.
