Walks in GuernseyYou are in: Guernsey > Nature > Walks in Guernsey > Lihou walk ![]() Lihou Island from Guernsey Lihou walkEddie Parks set off around the small island off Guernsey's west coast, Lihou, which is rich in birdlife and features the ruins of a priory. This walk starts off in the Prosperity Memorial Car Park which sits on the end of the headland between L'Eree, to the south, and Fort Saumarez, to the north. ![]() The Lihou causeway To get to Lihou there is a causeway which is only accessible at low tide, you can find the times either on the radio or on the board at the bottom of the slipway by the causeway. Once the causeway has been crossed you will come up by the house, operated by the Lihou Charitable Trust, and from there head left to the south coast of the island. The main feature of the island's southern coast is the old priory, now little more than ruin, which was once inhabited by monks and is the subject of local folklore. ![]() The south coast path From there you head to the southwest where a series of small islets are visible which act as a nesting ground for many species of seabird. The final leg of the walk takes you back around the remote north coast where, at times, even Guernsey is out of sight, before bringing you back to the house and the causeway over to Guernsey. For safety you must never cross the causeway when the sea is on any part of it as the tides are incredibly strong in the area. Times of the causeway opening are available through BBC Guernsey's radio service, the Guernsey Press and the notice board on the slipway beneath the Prosperity car park.
