Important dates for the communityBy Joe Gomes The Portuguese Community in Guernsey is just one of the many scattered round the world. The communities keep in contact through their government in Lisbon. Portuguese CommunityThe Portuguese Community represents 1.8% of Guernsey's population, approximately 1,100 people. Lessons in Portuguese language and culture are held at Notre Dame du Rosaire and St Peter Port Secondary School. The first immigrants arrived in Guernsey in 1963. July 1980Dr. Manuela de Aguiar Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities visits Guernsey. May 1982The Bishop of Funchal Dom Manuel Santana celebrates the day of Lady Fatima Patron Saint of Peace at St Joesph's Church. May 1983The newly elected Bishop of Funchal celebrates the week of Lady Fatima at St Joesph's Church. July 1984The first Congress of the Madeiran Communities, was chaired by the President of the Portuguese Republic, General Ramalho Eanes. There are 120 Delegates from all four corners of the world. Guernsey is represented by Joe Gomes. July 1993Guernsey's Bailiff Sir Graham Dorey and Lady Dorey visited the Island of Madeira. They were invited by Dr. Alberto Joao Jardim, President of the Executive Government of the Region of Madeira. September 1996The fourth Congress of the Madeiran Communities. Joe Gomes was elected as Vice-Counsellor for the Madeiran Communities Counsel for the UK and the Channel Islands. This gave the Portuguese Community in Guernsey better representation. May 1998Dr Alberto Joao Jardim and his delegation visit Guernsey for the first time. They attended a function organised by the Portuguese Association and met the Bailiff in his Chambers. June 1999Dr. Eduardo António Brazão de Castro Madeiran Regional Secretary for Human Resources and his delegation visited Guernsey for the second time. They attended the Portuguese National Day Celebrations and the 19th Anniversary of the Portuguese Association in Guernsey and met the Bailiff in his Chambers. May 2000Mr. Jose Lello Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities and his delegation visited Guernsey for the first time. They also attended the Bailiff's Chambers and a meal organised by the Portuguese Association. November 2000The fifth Congress of the Madeiran Communities. Joe Gomes was re-elected as Vice-Counsellor for the Madeiran Communities. January 2003Guernsey's Bailiff Sir De Vic Carey and Lady Carey, visited Madeira on a private holiday. During their stay in the Island the Secretary of the Madeiran Communities Dr Brazao de Castro, invited the Bailiff for a luncheon and dinner attended by the President Dr Alberto Joao Jardim.
