M is for Music
Dusk over the Severn by M Horton
Sunset over the Severn - an inspiration to musicians

The weather has been the inspiration for poets, writers and painters. It has also inspired some of our greatest composers to put pen to manuscript.

Richard Angwin explains.

According to Dvorak, "Mozart was 'sunshine'". And when you listen it is easy to see why.

But the influence of weather on music is much more direct than that. Without the vagaries of the European climate would Vivaldi have composed the Four Seasons?

Here are the songs and artists who made up the Top Five that featured in the A to Z on Points West:

1. Travis - Why does it always rain on me?
2. Crowded House - (always take the) weather with you.
3. The Beatles - Here comes the sun
4. Ella Fitzgerald - Stormy weather
5. Burt Bacharach - Raindrops keep falling on my head

Personal favourites of mine which did not make the list include:

Joy Division - Atmosphere
R.E.M. -I'll take the rain
Garbage - I’m only happy when it rains
David Bowie - Wild is the wind
Pearl Jam - Hail, hail
Zowie - Sunshine on a rainy day
Bob Dylan - A hard rain’s gonna fall

Finally, one I am definitely not so keen on:
B*witched - Blame it on the weatherman.
