Voices: Our Untold Stories How it all began The project chronicling the history of the county’s Chinese, African Caribbean and Asian communities was the brainchild of Nasreen Akhtar, the county’s ethnic services librarian. Chinese Stories Asian Stories   The first Chinese arrived in the late 1860s as seamen on British merchant ships. Migration to the UK from Asia pre-dates Indian independence in 1947 by centuries.   African Caribbean Stories Tell us your ethnic history   Black people have lived in the county since the 17th century.
