HND Performing Arts students are staging Lee's classic rites-of-passage
story as part of their Gloucestershire County Tour.
The
play, which is based in Stroud's Slad valley, is a true story
about the life of the late Laurie Lee.
In
the story, Lee recalls his childhood memories, thoughts, feelings
and family life.
The
stage adaptation uses storytelling and poetic language coupled
with minimal staging, to evoke the pastoral life of the early
20th Century.
Lee, was born in 1914 and experienced many things. He confessed
to going 'out on a whim' and when he was 19 he walked to London
and then travelled on to Spain at the outbreak of civil war.
He
spent his life writing, playing music and then in 1950 he returned
to his life in Slad and was still a regular at the local pub until
his death in 1997.
