Fact file

arrowThe government recommends that women should exercise five times a week or more for 30 minutes.

arrowResearch by a team from Bristol University has shown that regular exercise can cut the risk of bowel cancer by up to 50%, and may also help prevent breast, lung and endometrial cancer.

arrowNearly 40% of women in the survey said that lack of time stopped them from exercising more often. But nearly a fifth admitted that they did not exercise as much as they felt they should due to a lack of motivation.

Talk to us and each other

Well I've cooled off a bit on the diet and had the odd glass of wine (just one or two - honest).

Meaty madness

But to make up for not being so full-on with my meaty madness I've spent four evenings a week at the gym - and I love it.

Unfortunately some of my remaining flab has turned to muscle and consequently weighs more than it used to - hence I have put on two pounds.

But no matter I am more than happy with my firmer slimmer build since I began my regime three weeks ago.

I would never have thought that I could make such a dramatic change to my body in such a short space of time and not only that I feel great too.

My cravings for fruit have really diminished (although someone peeled an orange in the office the other day and I was gagging for a glass of freshly-squeezed).

I went out at the weekend to get a few bits for my hols and I can get into a whole dress size smaller than a month ago.

Size isn't everything

Look I know size isn't everything and us post-feminist women should realise that our fat fascism needs to be kept in check. But if I feel crap and bloated then no one can persuade me I have to learn to love my little tyres of flab.

A woman friend of mine gave me a really hard time last week for being such a devotee of my new eating habits. "Get a life," she said. "A woman of your intelligence should be able to transcend these social constructs."

Whatever (pronounced with a valley girl drawl) - I feel better - I look better and now this beach babe is heading for Barcelona with some tight tops and short skirts rather than large floaty dresses. God I'm so shallow :-)

Bill Mielke from Canada writes:

I'd like to wish Stacy well in her diet efforts. Second, I'd like to mention that I'm now entering my eighth week of the Atkins diet and I'm down 24 pounds and 4 inches around the waist line.

My blood pressure is down to normal, somewhere it hasn't been for over twenty years without having to take medications. I've found my energy levels are up, unlike what the "doomsayers" in certain circles have professed would happen.

I have spoken with people who were on Atkin's, and have failed. Often they have not read the book in it's entirity or have only heard what the diet is by "word of mouth" and were far off the "real" Atkin's, they were almost assured failure in their goals.

The people that I've spoken to that have read the whole book and not just "picked" out the menus, have all succeed, some for years.

Atkin's really isn't just a diet but as a lifestyle. Treated as a lifestyle, I believe most people will suceed in their health goals.

Once again, all the best Stacey.
