Fact file

arrowPsyllium is native to Iran and India and is currently cultivated in these countries. The seeds are primarily used in traditional herbal medicine. Psyllium seed husks are mainly used to treat constipation.

arrowThe Atkins diet has a two week induction period when you cannot eat specific food and you must keep your carb intake to 20g a day only.

arrowSome nutritionists warn that the diet flies in the face of all health advice to eat at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day.

Talk to us and each other

Well I can't believe it. I've lost five pounds already and I'm feeling rather smug.

Standing on the scales
The scales, they do not lie

So many friends have turned their noses up at my meaty diet and I have to admit I was sceptical myself. But I have stuck to it almost to the letter and it's paying off.

I'm even thinking about extending my target seeing as I've nearly reached the first one already. And the diet's not hard, just a bit dull. I think I need some inspirational recipes.

Breakfast, lunch and tea

Here's a brief glimpse of my daily intake so far. I begin my day with egg and bacon or boiled eggs and mayo. This is followed by a lunch of some kind of fish (mackerel, prawns, sardines) with a little rocket or lambs lettuce.

Dinner is seared tuna or organic steak with Mayo and maybe a cheese sauce with a green side salad. I might then have some nuts (peanuts, macadamia or walnut - all the rest have relatively high carbs) as a treat.

Cherries
Little packets of natural sweetness

But what are you really missing I hear you say. Well I'm missing coffee. As a caffeine addict I have about six cups of strong coffee a day. I've cut that down to just one and this is when I have my only milk.

I'm also missing fruit. Aahh fruit. Those wonderful juicy packets of natural sweetness. I'm seriously hankering but I haven't relented - yet.

Totally sugar-free

What I realise more than anything is that there is absolutely NO sugar in my diet now. I can eat all the dripping fat I like but sugar is just no go.

With all that meaty madness going on you get kind of 'meaty breath'. In fact everything about you (and I mean everything!) becomes a bit meaty. quote
Stacey Webb

There are a couple of other drawbacks. With all that meaty madness going on you get kind of 'meaty breath'. In fact everything about you (and I mean everything!) becomes a bit meaty.

To help with this I take psyllium husks but you must remember to quaff huge quantities of water otherwise meat just turns to cement and you wouldn't want that would you?

Cheat - moi?

And have I cheated? Yes, during the two week induction you're not supposed to have coffee, milk, alcohol or fruit. I've had milk, coffee, at least two glasses of wine and a fruit juice lolly.

Well - I'm only human and besides I've still lost five pounds, ha ha, and I feel fine:-)
