OK, so it might not be Route 66, but a quiet corner of Gloucester, which shall remain nameless, has become home to a group of exhibitionists who enjoy getting it on in public.

But what exactly is dogging all about?

Well, the term comes from the expression, "walking the dog" because that's what participants claim to be doing if they get caught.

According to Richard Byrne, the author of a new study about dogging: "Dogging is a hobby that some people undertake in the countryside and basically it's a mixture of being a swinger, a voyeur and an exhibitionist.

"People go out and perform sexual acts in public and other people enjoy watching them. Sometimes those people then join in and it turns into something of an orgy."

The hobby of dogging is on the increase in the county and has become a bit of a worry for Gloucestershire police.

Their main concern is that people who take part in this type of group sex and voyeurism, are vulnerable to assault, harassment, robbery and blackmail.

Martin Roddy, of Gloucestershire police, said: "Some of the issues we have to consider is public safety. If someone is going to come here late at night they are putting themselves at a potential risk.

"The reality is public sex environments are a very complex issue. The reality is that people who want to get involved in sexual activity will visit a quieter area because there's less chance of them being disturbed in their activity."

However, if you like to take part in dogging then the advice is just be careful where you go and what you do when you get there.

And remember, if you do get caught taking part in some kinky activity you were only "walking the dog" - nudge, nudge, wink, wink!
