GENUKI (Genealogical Information Service for the UK and Ireland)

This is a great site and a good place to
start for anything in the UK. It covers such things as: general research in the British Isles - eg - getting started, frequently asked questions, then info on records offices, surnames lists, parishes, family history societies, genealogy mailing lists.

It has info. on every county in the British Isles including all Ireland, an overview of the Public Records Office site and links to other websites.

Routes to Roots

The Gloucestershire Collection in Gloucester Library houses the largest collection of printed material about the county. As well as the family history sources listed it has an extensive range of books, pamphlets, maps and illustrations covering all aspects of life in Gloucestershire.

DocumentsOnline (formerly PRO-Online) allows you online access to the Public Record Office's collection of digitised public records, including both academic and genealogical sources.

Searching the index is free, and it costs £3 to download a digital image of a document.

Access to Archives

The English strand of the UK archives network. The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.
Public Record Office

Details of records held in the Public Records Office and the information leaflets etc. they produce.

Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths

This site is a project to put all civil registration records onto the Internet so they can be accessed free of charge.

Transcribing is done by volunteers - there are approx. 100,000 records in total, but so far only about one tenth have been completed.

Anything found needs to be checked against the original records (frequently available in county libraries on microfiche) It is also sometimes very difficult to get into because of heavy use.

AfriGeneas - African Ancestored Genealogy

AfriGeneas is a site devoted to African American genealogy, to researching African Ancestry in the Americas in particular and to genealogical research and resources in general.

Commonwealth War Graves

This site gives details of all who died in WWI and WWII, and has a searchable index.

It gives information about where members of the armed forces died, where the grave is and sometimes includes details of next of kin.

Sometimes difficult to get into because of heavy use.

Derek Benson's Gloucestershire Family History Research Site

Derek has been involved in genealogical research for over twenty years and can offer a service in all aspects of genealogy with a particular interest in resources based in Gloucestershire.

Campden and District Historical & Archaeological Society

Useful site full of information about the Chipping Campden area. Their local history room and archives house maps, building deeds, books, and a range of original and copied documents. There are also copies of census records and parish registers.
