Now a small country town, the Saxon settlement of Winchcombe, north of Cheltenham, was one of the most important towns in ancient Mercia.

Ghostly monk
Several ghostly monks have been seen in the town

Kenelm, son of King Offa (of Offa's Dyke fame) founded a Benedictine monastery here.

This may account for the preponderence of hooded apparitions which are said to haunt the town, including one which is regularly seen in a small lane known as The Monk's Walk.

Visitor information: Winchcombe is on the B4632 seven miles north-east of Cheltenham.
