When
this year's cheese-rolling races at Cooper's Hill, near Gloucester,
were halted by the earthquake in Algeria, organisers were left wondering
what to do with the giant cheeses that competitors chase downhill.
So
the organisers decided to auction off the bumper slices of cheese
rolling history to raise money for charity.
Two
cheeses, worth about £25 each, were auctioned on BBC Radio
Gloucestershire's Sunday Request Show - and all proceeds will go
to the Pied Piper Appeal to improve children's hospital facilities
in the county.
BBC
Gloucestershire's Steve Kitchen auctioned the cheeses on air and
managed to raise £55 for one and £50 for the other.
Ron
Reed from Tewkesbury paid £55 for the giant cheese so he could
give it to his son-in-law from Croatia.
Ron
had promised to take him to the cheese roling race but after it
was cancelled decided to bid for the cheese so his son-in-law would
have a momento to keep instead.
The
other cheese was successfully bid for by Sheila Walters from Cheltenham.
