Berkeley Castle took a step back in time in July when hundreds of people joined in the fun of Joust - A weekend of medieval mayhem.

Even the bad weather didn't dampen the mood as visitors were treated to a display of full contact jousting and daring displays of weaponry, falconry and archery.

So popular did it proved that organisers are extending the event to two weekends in 2004.

A spokesman for the organisers said: "A 50 per cent rise in attendance at the event in 2003 has firmly established Joust as one of the 'must see' events in the summer calendar."

Joust creates a fun, entertaining, cultural and educational event by making the UK's heritage and history come alive for both adults and children.

This is not your ordinary mediaeval festival from the moment you walk through the gates and are greeted by a multitude of Chaucerian characters in the Field of Flags, you have stepped back in time over 500 years.

Medieval knights battle it out

The Joust festival programme runs twice a day and includes a spectacular siege re-enactment where hundreds of heavily armoured knights attack and defend the castle, full contact jousting, cannon displays, archery, wandering minstrels, falconry, arts and crafts and performances from the internationally acclaimed singing group the Mediaeval Baebes.

There is also the Childrens Kingdom where kids can train to be knights of the realm and can try their hand at have-a-go archery. There is also pelt the peasant, the unrideable horse, face painting and the ever popular wound painting!

Then there's a Living History village and a Mediaeval Learning Zone. A new addition for Joust in 2004 is the Mediaeval World Zone which each year will feature exhibitions and demonstrations from a different part of the World as they were in the 15th century.
