101 things NOT to miss

Is there something or somewhere in our county you just love to recommend to others? Why not share it with us here as we aim to boost tourism by compiling a list of the things that make Gloucestershire special.

Elaine Keasley suggests the Barnwood Park and Arboretum is a place not to be missed

Elaine Keasley loves the Barnwood Park & Arboretum

"We're looking for 101 facts about the county - places to visit, things to see - just stuff that people don't know is here that we can tell others about" says Sam Williams from Gloucestershire County Council.

"I've been living down here for about seven years now; born and bred in Gloucester and wish I'd moved down sooner."

Paul Bodkin, Broadoak

In a bid to re-ignite the passion for local culture, Sam is leading a project to compile a list of the not-to-be-missed things that make Gloucestershire special.

"There's some big places that have had a lot of attention in the past, but there's a lot of smaller places out there in our very rural areas.

"Some amazing pubs, amazing sights, even amazing roads that might be worth walking down because the view from there is like nothing else on earth."

What must be experienced, visited or seen to be truly appreciated? Submit your suggestion using the simple form at the bottom of this page.

'Terrific view'

Paul Bodkin, 58, from the Forest of Dean, called BBC Radio Gloucestershire to nominate the view from the White Hart Inn at Broadoak.

"I just think it has the best view on the River Severn. You've got such a wonderful wide river, a terrific view of Newnham Church and down to the left you've got Westbury Church.

"I've been living down here for about seven years now; born and bred in Gloucester and wish I'd moved down sooner."

Paul suggested the view on the BBC Radio Gloucestershire afternoon show (weekdays from 3pm) and presenter David Smith took the opportunity to meet up with him to share the experience.

Elaine Keasley, 54, did the same. She made contact with David to nominate something very close to home and close to her heart - Barnwood Park and Arboretum.

"It's so handy for town and then you come into the park and there's so much here for children and adults.

"It's like being in the countryside. Immediately you have birds and lots of wildlife and it's just wonderful to have that so close to the city centre."

Suggestions so far:

1. Wendy Tomlinson, Stroud
"The view from Rodborough common towards the River Severn"

2. Tom Hadland, Oxford (originally from Southrop, near Lechlade)
"The view from St. John's Lock near Lechlade, on the corner of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire (and formerly Berkshire of course). Looking back into Gloucestershire over the meandering River Thames, lush green meadows, and the beautiful church spire"

3. Joe, Notts
"The Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford"

4. Paul Bodkin, Broadoak
The views from the White Hart Inn at Broadoak in the Forest of Dean

5. Elaine Keasley, Barnwood
Barnwood Park and Arboretum

6. Robin, Bourton on the Hill
Snowshill and Gloucester Cathedral

7. Paul, the flying morrisman
Chipping Camden

8. Hils, Cranham
Cranham woods and the rolling hills of the Cotswolds

9. John, Cheltenham
The Birds of Prey centre at Newent. Sudeley Castle. The Mechanical Museum at Northlech. Also there's the Stanway Fountain up by Toddington

10. Enid, Whiteway
Crickley Hill Country Park

11. Nick in Gloucester
Over Farm market

12. Mike, Sharpness
Just south of a village called Purton, alongside the river are all the remains of the ships that have been dragged up to protect the side of the canal from the surge of the river. The views from there are wonderful

13. Janet, Stonehouse
Gloucester Cathedral. Top of Frocester Hill. Bibury. Bourton on the Water

14. Nigel Thomas, Gloucester
"The Cheese Roll. A tradition that defies logic and remains totally unique in this bland and regulated world. Yes, there are now tame copies in other countries, but like "The Queen", there is only ONE real Cheese Roll"

15. David Bickley, Atherstone
Kemble Air Day
