Introducing...BadHandler

Cheltenham's Pete Butler is a teacher, jazz pianist, nightclub singer and burlesque accompanist. He's also the brains behind BadHandler, a solo act fusing blues, funk, indie and rock...and doing a pretty impressive job of it!

Pete Butler aka. BadHandler

The beginning

"I took the name BadHandler about six months ago and haven't been around particularly long in that capacity. I've written the songs quite quickly so really it hasn't been a particularly long journey at all."

The sound

"I'm just drawing on my influences from when I grew up, when I was listening to music back in the mid-90's, especially in that period of time, like Brit-pop. To some extent there's a little bit of that in the sound. There's also a bit of a nod to funk element and elements of, believe it or not, glam. It's just a big melting pot of all the stuff I like and it's hard to pinpoint exactly where I sit."

The writing

"I tend to demo songs and get the ideas just sat at a piano - playing, singing and recording. Generally, ideas for lyrics come through forming a melody. That's really the way it happens although it's not always the case."

The band?

"One of the issues for me is trying to sound like a band. I'm predominantly a keyboard player, although I can play a little bit of guitar, but I'm trying to sound like a band and that has been interesting to overcome. You're always fighting this issue and because of that, realistically, I would like to try to get a band together. The big issue is finding people that are on your wavelength, that dig what you're doing and have the same idea. The four piece band set-up would be perfect; keyboard, guitar, bass and drums, that would be fantastic."

The future

"I still consider myself learning and getting better at what I do and I want to continue with that - it takes time - and hopefully just continue to write some good material and perhaps gain even more direction with it."
