Close-up on Cleeve

In December 2007 BBC Gloucestershire got up close and personal in Bishop's Cleeve...

Our team were up close and personal in Bishop's Cleeve all week from Monday December 3 to Friday December 7.

It was the latest stop in a BBC Gloucestershire tour, seeking out and celebrating the passions and concerns of different communities all over the county.

Bishop's Cleeve is my type of place. Very jolly indeed! It was here that I discovered how the Pet Shop Boys got their name

Of course this suburb of Cheltenham is referred to as The Village because of its gay-friendly lifestyle. While Birdlip might be great fun in the summer, gay activities are much better catered for in this low-lying suburb of 'Bishop's Cleeve' (think about the name - how gay is that?) with its easy access to clubs & discoteques

James Westall
Do they call it a village because of its very happening gay scene? Those supermarkets aren't your usual village stores. I much prefer the scene at Birdlip

Nicola Kershaw (formerly Parkin)
I grew up in neighbouring Woodmancote in the 60's and 70's and my family used Bishops Cleeve's facilities as part of every day life. My brother and I went to Bishops Cleeve Primary School and we regularly attended St Michael's Church. You could buy almost anything in the village as there was a great variety of shops. I think it is a shame that two big supermarkets now overshadow the village but most of the shops continue to thrive which is probably a sign that village life happens in Church Road rather than Tesco's carpark! I'll talk to my father, Bernard Parkin, (the Queen's Royal Racing Photographer) who is a vibrant member of the community. He may be able to call and speak to you in the Tythe Barn tomorrow - I'm sure he will be able to tell you a tale!
